Climate Change: Risks, Challenges and Decisions

August 27th, 2008

As part of the run-up to the UN Conference on Climate Change (COP 15) to be held in Copenhagen at the end of the 2009, The International Alliance of Research Universities is organizing the conference “Climate Change: Risks, Challenges and Decisions” to be held in Copenhagen on March 10-12, 2009. Details about the conference can be found at http://www.climatecongress.ku.dk/

In their invitation letter, the organizers write that the conference seeks to “capture some of the enormous research energy currently being devoted to the elucidation, mitigation and adaption to climate change. “ The focus of the conference is on “providing a picture of the “big issues” that the scientific community feels that policy makers should be aware of in order to make enlightened decisions with respect to the balancing of adaptation and mitigation in the societal response to climate change.” After the conference a written summary of the main conclusions will be written at the request of the organizers of the COP 15 and will be a part of the official material made available to the participants in the COP meeting.

Among the sections to be held there will be one specifically focusing on climate and water (Climate Change and Water Systems) and we, as session co-chairs, wish to encourage you (and others you know who might be interested) to submit an abstract. We believe this will be a great opportunity to discuss the issues around water and climate change, exchange ideas and influence policy. The deadline for abstract submission is September 1st, 2008 and details about the conference and the submission process can be found at the conference webpage. Please consider submitting and abstract and disseminate the conference among your colleagues. We hope to see you in Copenhagen next year.

Best regards,

Maria Carmen Lemos—University of Michigan/USA
Torkil J. Claussen—DHI Water Policy/Denmark
