AGU/UGM Session on Human Dimensions

February 12th, 2007

The American Geophysical Union, the Mexican Geophysical Union, and several other societies from Latin America will be having a joint meeting in Acapulco, Mexico. The deadline for submitting abstracts for talks or posters is March 1st.

A session on “Human Dimensions of Climate Variability and Change in the Americas” will be held at the AGU/UGM Joint Assembly in Acapulco, 22-25 May 2006.

About the Human Dimensions Session:

Many societal issues in the Americas are sensitive to an interlocking set of climate phenomena including global warming, drought, the North American Monsoon, interannual variability of tropical storms, and the El Niño-Southern Oscillation. The IPCC Fourth Assessment Report is due out shortly before the Joint Assembly, which will focus public attention on the impacts of climate on society. Societal processes (e.g. institutional capacity) are critical to understanding the impacts of climate on sectors/communities vulnerabilities to climate change. This session will focus on the interaction of climate and society across a range of time scales, and what is known about adaptation and reduction of vulnerability to climate from these studies.

We plan invited talks from authors of the IPCC Working Group II Chapter on Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability, and well as invited talks on two other important arenas of climate and society interactions: applications of research on the North American Monsoon and the development of the North American Drought Monitor.

We invite papers and posters on: 1) the human dimensions of climate change and variability across the Americas; 2) societal processes related to drought, especially the trans-boundary societal impacts of drought; 3) the interaction of the North American Monsoon System and society; and 3) studies of applications of atmospheric and hydroclimatologic research to societal problems across a range of time scales.

There are two types of travel grants for students:

1) US and Mexican students, see
http://www.agu.org/meetings/ja07/?content=outreach

Applications are due by 1 March 2007.

2) Students from many Latin American countries, may apply for the Berkner travel fellowship, and applications are due Feb 15th, which is /before/ the paper/poster abstracts are due. See
